      ELIGIBILITY: This program provides advanced training for Medicolegal Death Investigators, Coroners, Medical Examiners, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Paramedics/EMT, Physicians, Nurses, Attorneys, Forensic Scientists, Funeral Directors and Embalmers. If you have any questions about whether you qualify, please contact Joseph Stopak ( before registering.   COURSE DESCRIPTION: This unique 3-day course covers fundamental topics of forensic pathology; examination and documentation of death scenes; evidence recognition, preservation and collection; and decedent identification.  Participants will enhance their knowledge by investigating dynamic mock scenes.  The mock scenes are interactive and require participants to role play. There will also be a Trace Evidence and DNA hands-on interactive demonstration.  Click here to download our brochure.   LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course, participants will...   Define types of death that must be reported to the Coroner or Medical Examiner in Ohio. Distinguish types of trauma and explain the mechanisms of injury.  Understand basic concepts used to distinguish entrance from exit gunshot wounds and determine range of fire. Describe investigative information that is important to the determination of cause and manner of death in cases of asphyxia, drowning, environmental exposure, in-custody, sudden unexpected infant deaths, and intoxication.  Recognize natural disease processes that present as violent or suspicious deaths. Distinguish early and late phase postmortem changes and identify variables used in the assessment of postmortem interval including limitations. List categories of decedent identification and describe methods and limitations.  Recognize trace evidence that may be present on a body and apply procedures to preserve or collect evidence.   Formulate a proper methodology for photographing a decedent and a death scene and identify probable causes of substandard images.  Investigate a simulated death scene in accordance with national guidelines.   CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDITS: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Case Western University School of Medicine and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 21 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  The ABMDI accepts continuing education that is approved by the AMA, ANA, ABA, POST, and post secondary institutions recognized by national educational accrediting agencies.
