      TARGET AUDIENCE: This program provides advanced training for Medicolegal Death Investigators, Coroners, Medical Examiners, Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, Emergency Medical Service providers, and Firefighters.   ELIGIBILITY: Law enforcement, physicians, nurses, emergency medical personnel, attorneys, forensic scientists and others working in a medical related field. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This unique 5-day course covers specialized topics in medicolegal death investigation including death scene management, fire fatalities, electrocution deaths, forensic identification through odontology and DNA, heroin and opiate fatalities, motor vehicle accident reconstruction, investigation of use of deadly force/in-custody deaths, forensic photography, recognition, preservation, collection and documentation of trace evidence and effective court testimony.    Click here to download our brochure. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After attending this course, participants will...   Understand basic concepts used to approach, preserve and document a death scene Recognize pertinent information required in fire and electrocution fatalities List two to three different methods of scientific identification of incomplete human remains Describe trends in regional statistics on opiate deaths  Understand the DAWN project and emergency room presentation of overdose deaths  Describe the role of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ohio High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas investigators in opiate overdose cases  List the investigative information that is important to the determination of cause and manner of death in cases of use of deadly force or in-custody deaths Describe resources available to the family members effected by overdose deaths Understand the toxicology laboratory perspective on testing and trends in the opiate crisis  Formulate a proper methodology for photographing a decedent and a death scene and identify probable causes of substandard images.  List essential components of effective court testimony from the Medicolegal Death Scene Investigators  Understand the process and utility of motor vehicle accident reconstructions as they apply to determining cause and manner of death. Recognize elements of trace evidence description, documentation and collection critical to determination of cause and manner of death CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDITS: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of Case Western University School of Medicine and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 32 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The ABMDI accepts continuing education that is approved by the AMA, ANA, ABA, POST, and post-secondary institutions recognized by national educational accrediting agencies. CLE credits are available.   FEE: The fee for this five day course is $450. The fee for participants who have already completed the basic three day program is $400.
